Our day started very early, probably 7:00 with the sound of a very loud helicopter flying very low. You'll probably, if you're down here, experience this, at least this time of year. I don't know if this is all the time, but I think most every year that we've been here there's been some type of helicopter or plane flying low. Basically, they're spraying insecticide because there is a problem with mosquitoes here. It's under control a lot more due to some of the things they've done at the Ding Darling Preserve, but also just all over the island, obviously there are mosquitoes and other bugs, so they do a regular job of spraying the island and I think pretty much the entire island with insecticide to get rid of the bugs. So they have a helicopter that sprays for that and in years past I did see another type of plane, just an airplane that was spraying.
I guess they try to do it maybe around 7:00 a.m. every time to avoid spraying people, cause usually aren't too many people out at that hour. I'm sure they don't want to do earlier than that. People would complain. So don't be alarmed if you hear a loud invasion, Vietnam-type action going on. Don't worry, it's just them taking care of the island.
I got out and took a little video of that and took some pictures and video of the grounds. Actually caught an armadillo wandering around the grounds here at Sanibel Moorings and it didn't seem too alarmed. It did scurry off when it saw me, but it was pretty brave and brazen.
Then I went back in and got a little more sleep. We finally got up about, guess it was about 9:30 or 10:00. Susan went on out to the beach and I decided I was going to ride my bike again, so I took the bike out and actually went on a four-hour bike ride.
Susan: (Singing) "A four hour tour."
Fred: Most of that was . . . the reason it was so long was that I was taking a lot of videos and pictures around the island. I wanted to cover the different things that we hadn't covered yet. So I got different places where you can stay and go to have fun and to shop.
Fred: Then when I got back, I had some leftovers from...
Susan: Twilight Café
[unfortunately, now out of business].
Fred: Twilight Café and the Asian stir fry was excellent once again. And then I went out to the beach and met Susan and actually talked with a couple from, was it Philadelphia?
Susan: Uh huh.
Fred: A lot of people from all over the country, even all over the world here, so if you like meeting new people and talking to folks, it's a great place to do that on the beach.
Then I took a little walk on the beach and decided to pack it on in about, I guess it was maybe 3:45 or 4:00. And we're starting the sad process now of packing up and getting ready to leave.
For dinner on Friday night we were not really sure where we were going to go. We just sort of pulled out and started driving and then we decided we would try
Ellington's, which is a restaurant almost next to where we are staying and fortunately we made a great choice. It was an excellent place to eat. Excellent food and they also had jazz. Obviously it's based on Duke Ellington. That's what the "Ellington's" is from and they had some gentlemen there who were playing live jazz. It started about 7:00 and I think they played till 11:00. We really found a neat place to go get some great food and entertainment at the same time. So I'd definitely highly recommend that.
Our meal was about $88. That included a couple of glasses of wine and a beer. The wine was $15.50, beer was only $3.75. Anyway, give it a shot. It's located in the
Sanibel Inn complex on East Gulf Drive, so it's a good place to try. After that we went to
Dairy Queen and were able to get right in, even though it was prime time. I got a Blizzard, Susan got just ice cream and it was a great way to end our week here. So we're now going to head on back to Atlanta.
